NATIONAL WOMEN’S CONFERENCE TO SHARE
FINDINGS FROM THE GEWE ACT 2022
IMPLEMENTATION AND POLITICAL PARTIES’ COMPLIANCE WITH WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT PROVISIONS IN THE POLITICAL PARTIES’ ACT
2022.
Campaign for Good Governance (CGG), in collaboration with its partners through the ICSP Project, supported by Trócaire and Irish Aid, successfully convened a National Conference on 7th October 2025 in Freetown. The conference did serve as a platform where the assessment report on political parties’ compliance with the women’s empowerment provisions in the Political Parties Act (PPA) 2022, as well as public and private sector compliance with the women’s empowerment provisions in the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act 2022 was shared key interlocutors .

The conference brought together key stakeholders from government institutions, representatives of women from political parties, women-led organizations, civil society groups, market women, the media, councilors, parliamentarians…
Findings from the assessment highlighted the progress made in implementing these two landmark legislations—both Acts representing major milestones in Sierra Leone’s journey toward gender equality and inclusive governance.
However, the findings also underscored persistent challenges in ensuring women’s equal participation in decision-making processes at both the local and national levels, as well as within political party structures.

Participants recognized that, while some commendable progress has been made, more coordinated efforts are required to strengthen institutional compliance and to create a supportive environment for women’s leadership and participation in governance, hence, the following actions were recommended as crucial to achieving these goals:
Strengthening collaboration between women’s organizations and political parties to sustain advocacy for the full enforcement of the minimum 30% quota for women’s representation in decision-making processes.

Empowering institutions to conduct public awareness campaigns that increase citizens’ understanding of the rights and benefits guaranteed under the GEWE and PPA Acts.
Encouraging political parties to amend their constitutions to align with the gender provisions of the Political Parties Act.
The Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs to periodically track institutional compliance with the women’s empowerment provisions in both Acts.

Supporting institutions to provide training and capacity-building opportunities for women in political and leadership positions.
Strengthening the capacity of key institutions—such as political parties, ministries, departments, agencies, and private sector entities—to effectively implement gender mainstreaming frameworks and accountability mechanisms.
The conference concluded with a strong call from stakeholders for sustained advocacy, institutional collaboration, and resource mobilization to guarantee women’s equal participation in all spheres of national development.

CGG views these valuable contributions from participants as a vital pathway to empowering women and institutions, thereby increasing women’s representation and participation in decision-making processes across Sierra Leone.
As a national non-governmental organization dedicated to enhancing citizen participation in governance through advocacy, capacity building, and civic education, CGG remains firmly committed to advancing gender equality and ensuring the effective implementation of the GEWE Act 2022 and the Political Parties Act 2022 in Sierra Leone.
