Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance: Network of Female Councillors (NFC) Advances National Coordination

Following the successful 2024 launch of the Network of Female Councilor’s (NFC) Sierra Leone by Campaign for Good Governance (CGG), in partnership with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA) and ICSP Partners, a follow-up engagement was held on 20th October 2025 at the CCSL Hall, Kingharman Road, Freetown. The event was supported by Trócaire and Irish Aid, reaffirming their commitment to advancing women’s political participation and leadership in Sierra Leone.

Bringing together female councillors from all sixteen districts, the engagement focused on strengthening leadership and advocacy capacities to enable more effective participation in local governance and community decision-making.

Participants received intensive training in leadership development and advocacy strategies designed to enhance their ability to influence governance processes at both local and national levels. The sessions equipped councillors with the practical tools needed to drive policy change, champion inclusive development, and apply good governance principles within their communities.

A key component of the training was lobbying and stakeholder engagement, empowering councillors with the skills to collaborate with local development actors, mobilize community support, and navigate the political complexities that often hinder effective service delivery.

BUILDING STRONGER LEADERS, SHARPER ADVOCATES

A significant outcome of the engagement was the establishment of the National Executive Structure of the Network of Female Councillors (NFC). This newly formed body will oversee the strategic coordination, administration, and daily operations of the network, fostering unity and institutional sustainability.

A UNIFIED STRUCTURE FOR LONG TERM SUSTAINABILITY

The formation of the NFC National Executive marks a transformative step toward institutionalizing a strong, collective voice for female leaders in local governance. This platform not only supports women in navigating political structures but also amplifies their leadership in driving development, accountability, and inclusive governance across Sierra Leone.

CGG, alongside MoGCA, Trócaire, Irish Aid, and other partners, remains committed to ensuring that female councillors continue to build the confidence, capacity, and collective power needed to influence meaningful change at all levels.
